THE CONCEPT OF “UNDERSTATEMENT”: COGNITIVE-ASSOCIATIVE ANALYSIS

The concept of “Understatement| is considered in the article from the angle of an associative approach. The author analyses the associative connections of the word “Understatement”, which allows figuring out a specific inner structure of the meaning, a deep system of interconnections, underlying native speakers’ cognitive picture of the world. The ethno-cultural peculiarities of the concept of “Understatement” in the English language are emphasized by means of mapping the corresponding lexical groups, comparing value judgments and set expressions, based on behavioral stereotypes. While analyzing the concept sphere of “Understatement” the author underlines the representativeness and relevance of the studied concept, which reveals the most important characteristics of the Anglo Saxon society, as well as its connection with some mental and language categories

THE STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF THE YAKUT ALGYSES SPELLS

The article is dedicated to one of the oldest genres of the Yakut folklore. Algys is connected with perception of the world and the socio-economic structure of the Sakha people. Basing on the structural anthropology of Claude Levi Strauss, the author analyzes three Yakut algyses: "Spell of Fire ", "Spell of Bayanaj ", "Supplication of Fisherman". The results of the structural analysis of three well-known Yakut algyses confirm the efficiency of the ideas of Claude Levi Strauss and the validity of using of author's methodological approaches

THE INTERTEXT FUNCTIONS IN BIOGRAPHICAL NOVELS BY P. ACKROYD

The analysis of the intertext functions in biographical novels by P. Ackroyd has been reviewed in this article. Using citations, reminiscences, and allusions creates a factual structure of the works and becomes a particular tool of the hero’s characteristic. Its purpose is to destroy the stereotyped images. The intertext helps P.Ackroyd to comment the works of his heroes and to include them in the cultural paradigm. As a result, the structure of the biographical novel becomes open and allows of different interpretations
